Prayer is the purpose of Blackburn Cathedral, and we will especially be praying for the Parishes of the Diocese during the Advent season. For the local church it is a vital time of the year both liturgically and evangelistically. Liturgically it is a dramatic season of prayer and preparation as we renew ourselves in the hope of the Lord’s return. Evangelistically we will all be putting on events that point forward to Christmas and through them we will seek to capture the imaginations of those on the margins of the Church with the wonder of the Christ-child. Holding these two aspects of this Season together is a difficult balancing act, and you will be much in our prayers.

You may well have plans for the evening of Advent Sunday, but if not we would dearly love to welcome you to Blackburn Cathedral. The Advent Carol Service at 6.30pm on November 27th is one of the highlights of the year. The Cathedral Choir and Girls’ Choir will both be singing, and the service makes full use of the beautiful building. It is a moving and dramatic way of starting off this holy season in company with Christians from across Lancashire.

It may be that you would like to bring a group from your Parish in which case we will reserve seating for you. In this case please by Friday November 18th. However there are no tickets so if you are coming in a smaller group, just turn up!

‘Drop down ye heavens from above,’ we will hear and sing during Advent. This precious season reminds us that, regardless of human pride, this is God’s world, he is in charge and in Christ his victory is already won. May you and all your people find refreshment and joy in that message of hope this Advent season.
