The Attic Child by Lola Jaye
The Attic Child is a historical tale about race and privilege. It follows two children trapped in the same attic but almost a century apart, bound by a secret.
In 1907, Celestine, a twelve year old boy, spends most of his time locked in an attic room of a large house by the sea. Taken from his homeland and treated like an unpaid servant, he dreams of his family despite forgetting what his mother looks like and sometimes even his real name…
Decades later, Lowra, a young orphan girl born into wealth, finds herself banished to the same attic. Under the floorboards she discovers an old porcelain doll and an unusual, beaded claw necklace. Behind the cupboard, she discovers a sentence written in an unidentifiable language etched into the wall. These artefacts offer Lowra a strange kind of comfort and leads her to believe that she is not the first child to be imprisoned in the attic.
