Wendy’s Story
For just over a year I have been volunteering with Bookmark Reading. Bookmark give you lots of training and support and they are very short of volunteers. Over 60 schools are waiting For a volunteer to read with their children. I think there’s over 400 children waiting. It’s a wonderful charity and well worth helping. You just need to give two half hours a week for 6 weeks. I’m on my 15th child. It’s online and very easy to do. It’s a very rewarding thing to do because the children and teachers all appreciate the help. There is no way that teachers could give the children one-to-one in a class of 12 on computers. I love it. We don’t just read, we play games and do word searches. We try to make it as much fun as possible. it’s a marvellous feeling when at the end of the six weeks your child has improved. Let’s hope we get some volunteers. I just wondered if any of the congregation all their friends can spare any time to help? All the materials needed are on their website.
I did wonder if the local primary schools would benefit from the programme?

Bookmark was started in 2018 with a simple vision: we want every child to read.
7.1 million adults in England struggle to read and face challenges like these every day – at home, on the move, in the workplace, and with their friends and families.
We want to stop this trend. We want every child to read.
In December 2020, Bookmark commissioned the National Literacy Trust to review both our face-to-face and online reading programmes against the evidence base regarding effective literacy interventions for primary school.
They found that Bookmark’s reading programmes are well designed and align well with existing evidence. The table below summarises these findings, and the full report is available here.
