Gardening Tips for June in Bolton-le-Sands

In June in Bolton-le-Sands, focus on planting, feeding, and maintaining your garden. Plant runner beans, French beans, squash, and tomatoes, and continue sowing salad leaves, beetroot, and carrots. Feed tomatoes regularly with a high-potash feed, and water regularly, especially containers and newly planted specimens.

Vegetables:
Plant out young plants of runner beans, French beans, courgettes, pumpkins, squashes, and sweetcorn, along with outdoor tomatoes and cucumbers. 
  • Other:

    Plant out Brussels sprouts, cabbages, cauliflowers, and celeriac.

  • Salad Leaves:

    Continue sowing salad leaves, beetroot, and carrots for a continuous supply throughout summer. 

  • Fruit Trees:

    Plant young fruit trees and bushes, especially apples, pears, strawberries, and raspberries. 

Feeding:
  • Tomatoes:

    Feed tomatoes regularly with a high-potash feed to encourage fruit development 

  • Flowering Plants:

    Use a high-potash feed for flowering plants, and a nitrogen-rich fertilizer for leafy greens. 

Maintenance:
  • Watering:

    Water regularly, especially newly planted specimens and containers. Aim to water early in the morning or late evening to reduce evaporation. 

  • Mowing:

    Mow lawns regularly, but in hot, dry weather, mow less often and on a higher blade setting. 

  • Weeding:

    Keep weeds under control. 

  • Deadheading:

    Deadhead repeat-flowering roses and pick sweet peas to encourage more flowers. 

  • Pruning:

    Prune spring-flowering shrubs, trim hedges, and give Wisteria its summer prune. 

  • Pest Control:

    Keep an eye out for pests like aphids, slugs, and caterpillars and take action early. 

  • Harvesting:

    Harvest garlic and onions once their leaves turn yellow. Net strawberries as they ripen to protect them from birds. 

Additional tips:
  • Rainwater Collection: Make sure you have adequate methods to collect rainwater 
  • Containers and Hanging Baskets: Containers and hanging baskets need to be watered daily, especially when the weather is hot and windy. 
  • Pinching Out: Pinch out the side shoots on tomatoes. 
  • Potato Harvesting: First early potatoes should be ready to harvest this month.
  • Wildlife: Make a log pile for wildlife and keep bird baths topped up.
