HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY SUMMER SHOW
Bolton le Sands Summer Show Report 10th August 2024
By Louise Belcher, Show Secretary
Bolton le Sands Horticultural Society’s 94th Annual Summer Show was held on SATURDAY 10th AUGUST from 2pm – 4.15pm at the Village Community Centre.
We were very lucky to have a beautiful afternoon for the 94th Annual Summer Show and the public came thronging in to see the lovely exhibits. The Show was opened by retiring President David Regan and his wife Lynn. Lynn was presented with a lovely bouquet by Amelia & Heidi Mckechnie, while incoming President, Barbara Bainbridge, presented David with a token of the society’s appreciation for his years in the role.
Long Service awards were presented to Pat Davey and Doreen Steele for 20 years service to the Society.
Despite a slow start to the growing year there was plenty of fruit and vegetables on display, with some particularly fine peas and beans this year. This year the Blue Ribbon was won by Martin Ellam for his extra long truss of tomatoes and the Banksian Medal was won by Bill Howarth. Brenda Muir won the National Vegetable Society Silver Medal for a truss of plum tomatoes. Alex Rhodes won the National Sweet Pea Society Bronze Medal for his vase of sweet peas and Rebecca Wait won the National Dahlia Society Bronze Medal for a vase of pompon dahlias. Both Alex and Rebecca were first time exhibitors so it goes to show that the old hands don’t always win all the prizes.
Other awards presented at the show included those for the Village Garden Competition:
Len Parkinson Trophy for Best Large Garden – Belinda & Steve Garland,
H & M Pennington Trophy for Best Small Garden – Jo Kidd
Arthur Briggs Trophy for Best Patio Garden – Sue Crookall
David Rodwell Shield for Most points in Village Garden Competition – Sue Crookall.
150 people came through the doors to enjoy the exhibition and to partake of the excellent coffee & cakes provided by the lovely team from the WI.
This year’s Auction of donated exhibits was conducted by Social Secretary, Steve Slater, aided by auction runners Bel & Loki Rhodes. The Auction raised £34, half of which will be donated to our Charity of the year, Growingwell.co.uk
Show Secretary Louise Belcher would like to thank all those who entered the show and those who came to see the show, but particularly those who helped set everything up and run such a wonderful event. It takes a lot of work and a certain amount of magic to turn an empty hall into a spectacular flower show.
