This is the strangest of times. In the midst of a global pandemic can we have a happy Christmas?
Wherever you are, whatever situation you find yourself in, the message of Christmas for you is eternal. The great bible reading of Christmas Eve, from the first chapter of the Gospel of John, is God’s message to us all today in the darker days of 2020:
“The light shines in the darkness and the darkness did not overcome it”
Hold onto the light. It is there for you. The joy and great celebration of Christmas is because of this promise. It is a promise that holds fast whether or not we have singing and laughter and celebrations, it is a promise that holds fast if we have isolation, loneliness, and bereavement. It is for all. Young and old. However dark it gets, however different things are this year, however much we yearn to share with others, however deep in the darkness we find ourselves, the small light flickering in the darkness will grow brighter. The light shines in the darkness and the darkness did not overcome it. The light is eternal. It will never fade, and it will never be false hope. It brings security, hope, joy, and love.
Nothing can separate us from the love of God in Jesus Christ. Nothing.
Wherever you are, whatever situation you find yourself in, know that Christ is there with you, lighting your way. Follow the light that shines in the darkness this Christmas and receive tidings of comfort and joy, the love of God in Jesus that overflows in abundance – for you!
May the joy of the angels, the eagerness of the shepherds, the perseverance of the wise men, the obedience of Joseph and Mary, and the peace of the Christ-child be yours this Christmas and may
God bless you all, those you love, and those for whom you pray.
