A Haven of Peace and Tranquility on our Doorstep.
History
The Monastery of Our Lady of Hyning was founded in 1974 by four sisters from their communities at Slough and Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex. Until 1973, the house and garden was the home of the Peel family; a splendid country mansion situated in acres of farmland. This main house now serves as the guesthouse. When the sisters arrived they used the servant quarters and the guests would use the main house.
In 1983, an extension was built to link a large outbuilding to the main house. This is now the Community area. A year later, a large barn was converted into a simple and prayerful Chapel with the cloister corridor built to link it with the main house.
After a long period of very limited activity because of COVID and then the refurbishment project, they are delighted to announce that their Guest House is now open again and they began welcoming guests in October 2022. The new en-suite bedrooms in the main house are splendid!
A minimum stay of two nights is suggested so that guests can fully appreciate their lovely new rooms and help the smaller community maintain the guest house.
The community write:
“Through our work of hospitality, we welcome those who wish to share the peace and prayerfulness of our monastic guesthouse and garden. The guesthouse is available most of the year to individuals or groups of all denominations wishing to pray, reflect or study in the quiet atmosphere of a monastery.”
