The Carved Bible

On the night of Friday 26th November 2021, Storm Arwen came to Bolton-le-Sands and brought down a 200-year-old beech tree in the church grounds, close to the gateway by The Blue Anchor.

Miraculously, the falling tree missed The Blue Anchor, the east end of the church, and the Vicarage opposite. Fortunately, no one was hurt, and thanks to the quick action of the Lancaster City Council team, the fallen tree was quickly removed and the road could be reopened.

Local resident, Michael Parkinson, who has lived in the parish all his life, used some of the wood from the fallen tree to carve this remarkable Bible. It was presented to Holy Trinity Church and dedicated at a special service on 19th June 2022.

The space left by the fallen tree was re-planted in red, white and blue as the ‘Jubilee Garden’ to mark the Platinum Anniversary of the succession of Queen Elizabeth ll.

The Vicarage can be seen in the background – a narrow escape!

Thanks be to God.
