Report of the Bolton le Sands Horticultural Society’s 76th Autumn Show written by Steve Slater, Social Secretary.

“We’ve had a really great afternoon, I am aiming to enter next year”, was a comment made by a visitor leaving a very successful 76th Autumn Show held in the Community Centre by Bolton le Sands & District Horticultural Society on Saturday 18th October.
“I can’t get over the quality, quantity and the variety of exhibits” was another regular comment. “How do you grow leeks to that size?” was another.
The show covered exhibits from fruit and veg including very long leeks and parsnips, Floral Art such as wreaths and table centre pieces, Children’s section showing their flair for design, Handicrafts, Photos, cakes, jams and drinks to flowers and plants of many types.
In the Art section two paintings entered were originally started during the Summer Show and based on winning exhibits. “I was amazed at tomato trusses as well as other exhibits and started sketching while I had my tea and cake” said the exhibitor.
Several exhibitors travelled from out of the area from Chorley, Bolton and Southport and the show attracted visitors from just as wide an area.
The local WI supported the show by serving refreshments and home made cakes which had been donated or made by members.
The raffle attracted a lot of interest as did the Auction of produce at the end of the show both driven by Steve Slater.
The Auction raised £60 which will be donated to the Horticultural Society’s Charity of the Year: MS Society Lancaster, Morecambe & District. The whole show was pulled together by Louise Belcher who said “We pulled off a very successful show thanks to a brilliant team committee members and helpers”.
The Blue Ribbon for Best Exhibit in Show was won by Trevor Piearce for a specimen fern.
